The four roles we’re filling

Cook’s is hiring for four positions, and each one has Jacksonville work waiting for it:

  • Service technician. Diagnosis and repair on every brand, residential and commercial, including on-call rotation.
  • Install technician. Full system replacements and new installs, Lennox equipment, with the duct and electrical work that old Duval houses demand.
  • Maintenance technician manager. Running the twice-yearly agreement visits across the sectors and keeping that calendar honest.
  • Apprenticeship helpers. Entry-level, learning on the truck, moving toward a technician role.

What a Jacksonville route day looks like

The company is headquartered at 37 Fairmont Ln in Palm Coast, about 74 minutes from downtown, so Jacksonville is organized into sectors rather than run as one sprawling territory. A technician might hold Mandarin, San Marco and the Southside one day, Arlington and the Beaches another, the Northside and Nassau the next. The route is planned the evening before, the van is stocked for the housing stock in that sector, and the day starts near the first stop rather than at the shop.

That structure is why the job suits someone who already lives in Duval or Nassau. You work the roads you know.

Historic attics, beach condensers, well-water exurbs

This market throws more variety at a technician than most. In Riverside, Springfield and Ortega you’ll work in houses that were never designed for ductwork, where the return is in a closet and the air handler is above a plaster ceiling. In Arlington and the Westside you’ll trace attic duct leaks in 1960s block ranches. At Jacksonville Beach, Mayport and Fernandina Beach you’ll see salt corrosion that would take a decade inland. Out in Bryceville, Callahan and the Baker County towns you’ll service package units on manufactured homes fed by well water. And after every big storm you’ll inspect flooded condensers along the St. Johns and surge-damaged boards across the city.

A technician who spends a year on these routes has seen more than most see in five.

Who does well here

People who like being trusted. This is a family-owned company; Jerry runs sales and Sean leads the technicians, and the person on the route makes real decisions in the customer’s house without calling a regional manager. People who are honest about what they don’t know yet. And people who understand that the drive is part of the job and the company is upfront with customers about it, so the technician never has to cover for a promise that couldn’t be kept.

How to apply

Call the shop, or send an email to support@cooksair.com with where you live, which role you’re after and a short account of your experience. Certifications help, and we’ll ask about them, but attitude and a clean driving record matter at least as much for a route this far from the shop.

Working the Jacksonville routes

Do I have to drive to Palm Coast every morning?

Not every morning. Technicians assigned to Jacksonville sectors typically start from home with a stocked van and meet the day’s route, with trips to the Fairmont Lane shop for restocking, training and the occasional all-hands. Install crews stage equipment the day before.

Is the Jacksonville route all residential, or is there commercial work?

Both. Houses are most of it, but the sector includes rooftop units and split systems on offices along Southside Boulevard, retail near St. Johns Town Center and small industrial buildings near the port.

What does a helper with no HVAC experience actually do on day one?

Carry, cut, hang and learn. An apprentice helper rides with an install crew, pulls old equipment, runs line sets, seals duct and watches a licensed technician do the brazing and charging. It’s a real path to technician, not a permanent helper slot.

How is on-call for Jacksonville nights handled from an hour away?

On a rotation, and a technician based north of the river would be an asset to it. Night calls go to whoever is closest and available, and the dispatcher, not the technician, takes the customer’s call.
