Seventy-two-degree dew points decide when a Jacksonville air conditioner gets replaced
Jacksonville's wet summers wear systems out in a particular way. Here is how to tell when yours is done, and what a replacement from Cook's involves.

What a wet summer does to a machine
Between June and August the dew point in Jacksonville averages 71 to 73 degrees. By early August nearly every day is muggy. The hot season, with highs over 85, runs roughly May 21 to September 20, and then hurricane season keeps the humidity up well into November, with the occasional multi-day outage thrown in. Winter brings around 14 freeze nights, three of them hard, which matters because most of the systems we replace here are heat pumps that have to do both jobs.
An air conditioner in this city spends more of its life wringing water out of air than it does lowering the temperature. Long cycles, wet coils, a drain that never dries. Combine that with a building boom that put a very large share of Jacksonville’s housing up after 2000, and you get what we see now: a wave of original systems in Oceanway, Intracoastal West, Baymeadows and the Yulee subdivisions reaching 15 to 25 years old at the same time.
That is the backdrop for every replacement conversation we have in Duval County. The question is never whether the climate is hard on the equipment. It is whether this particular unit has anything left.
The repair-or-replace decision tree
Work through it top to bottom. Stop at the first line that describes your system.
- Is the system under 10 years old? Repair it, almost without exception. Even a compressor is worth replacing under a manufacturer warranty.
- Is it 10 to 15 years old with a single failed part? Repair it, unless the part is the compressor or the evaporator coil. Those two repairs at that age are where replacement begins to win on arithmetic.
- Is it R-22? If the nameplate says R-22 and the problem involves refrigerant, replacement is almost always the right call. The gas is scarce and the system is, by definition, old. Arlington and Westside ranch houses still hold a lot of these.
- Is it past 15 years and the repair quote is more than about a third of a new system? Replace.
- Has it been under water? Air handlers that sat in St. Johns floodwater in Riverside, San Marco or Ortega during Matthew, Irma or Nicole are candidates for replacement regardless of age, and the new one goes in higher.
- Is the ductwork the real problem? Then a new condenser fixes nothing. Fix the duct first, then decide.

We walk through this tree with you on the first visit, with the readings in hand. If the answer is repair, you get a repair quote. If it is replace, you get a free estimate on a new system and a working repair in the meantime where one is possible.
Lennox on the install, every brand on the service side
Cook’s is a Lennox dealer, and Lennox is what we install. The lineup runs from single-stage systems that meet JEA’s Tier 1 rebate thresholds up through variable-speed equipment that holds humidity in the low 50s on an August evening, which is the number that makes a Jacksonville house feel cool at 76 instead of 73.
We service Lennox, Carrier, Bryant, Trane and essentially every major brand for repair and maintenance, so switching to Lennox on the replacement does not mean abandoning the equipment in your rental in Murray Hill or your parents’ place in Mandarin.

Warranty notes worth reading before you sign
- Parts versus labor. Manufacturer warranties cover parts for a set number of years. Labor is a separate matter, and ask for the labor coverage on a Cook’s install in writing. [[CONFIRM WITH JERRY]]
- Registration. Most extended parts warranties require registering the equipment within a window after install. We handle the registration.
- Maintenance records. Manufacturers can ask for proof of annual service on a warranty claim. Two Cook’s visits a year create that record automatically.
- Coastal coils. For the Beaches, Mayport and Amelia Island, ask about coated coils. Corrosion is wear, not a defect, and no warranty treats it otherwise.
- Satisfaction guaranteed. Cook’s stands behind the install itself. If something is not right after we leave, we come back.
Paying for it: financing, rebates and what ended
Financing with low monthly payments is available on new high-efficiency systems. Lender, rate and term are quoted at the kitchen table, not on a web page, and you will see them in writing before you decide.
Two rebate facts matter in Jacksonville. JEA’s Heating & Cooling rebate has paid $200 on ENERGY STAR split systems meeting 16 SEER2, 11.0 EER2 and 8.0 HSPF2, applied directly on the contractor’s invoice. The 2026 program year closed October 10, 2026; ask whether the next cycle is open when you install. [[CONFIRM WITH JERRY]] Baker County customers on Clay Electric have had a separate heat pump rebate. The federal 25C tax credit ended December 31, 2025, so any quote still leaning on it is out of date.
Install day, briefly
A load calculation and a duct check come first, before any equipment is ordered. On the day, the crew protects floors, recovers the old refrigerant, pulls the old equipment, sets the new condenser on a level pad (raised above base flood elevation on riverfront lots), replaces the line set where it is undersized or corroded, installs a new air handler or coil, adds a float switch and a surge protector, and runs a full cooling cycle with the readings recorded. The permit and inspection are ours to handle. You get a walkthrough, the thermostat set up, and a maintenance date for the first fall visit.
Replacement questions from Jacksonville homeowners
It's 95 out and the old unit is dead. Can a new one go in this week?
Usually yes. Cook’s installs around the clock, seven days a week, and a standard split-system changeout in a Jacksonville garage or closet is typically a one-day job. In a heat wave the limiting factor is equipment availability, and we will tell you on the phone what is in stock before you commit to anything.
What do I need to move or clear before the crew shows up?
A clear path from the driveway to the air handler, the attic hatch or closet emptied, and the area around the outdoor unit free of planters and hose reels. Pets in a closed room. We bring floor protection; you do not need to lay anything down.
Is this a one-day job, or will I be without cooling overnight?
Most straight replacements are done in a day, with the new system cooling before the crew leaves. Jobs that add duct modifications, relocate the air handler or raise the condenser above a flood elevation can run into a second day, and you will know that from the quote.
Does the City of Jacksonville have to sign off on a new system?
A mechanical permit and inspection apply to a system replacement in Duval, Nassau and Baker counties. Cook’s pulls the permit and schedules the inspection as part of the job; you do not deal with the counter.
